Home Up More October

Sunday        October 1, 2000

…I checked the truck out again, drove it about 10 miles to get some donuts for the kids and verify it ran OK and the alignment wasn’t too screwed up… everything seems fine… I will take it to T&J as soon as I can and have them put it up on the rack to see if there is anything dangerously wrong with it.

I tried to watch football but it was a lost cause, we had "B"’s party… he is now 11 years old… actually he has been 11 for 5 days but this is when he wanted his party…

``Golf is like life in a lot of ways: The most important competition is the one against yourself.  All the biggest wounds are self-inflicted.  And you get a lot of breaks you don't deserve, both ways.  So it's important not to get too upset when you're having a bad day.''

… Lots of turmoil this morning… Mike was feeling confrontational and so there was a lot of pointless recriminating going on. The biggest problem we have around here is no one appears to know how to back down from an argument. It’s getting so that I really hate mornings… If you knew that every time you opened a certain door someone would throw ice-water in your face you would eventually dread opening the door.

Nobody wants to be up in the morning, except Autumn, Autumn is happy pretty much all the time, so everyone has an “attitude” the kids don’t want to get dressed they don’t like the cereal, they don’t want to go to school, they can’t find their pants or their shoes, or matching socks or their shirts, they can’t find their homework, or they didn’t do their homework… it would all just be tedious if it wasn’t so predictable.

I took "B" to Devereux… I got him there at about 1015, amazing… I talked to Lisa and told her that "B" had been very well behaved…I walked back to the truck and noticed that the bumper appeared to be awfully close to the tire on the passenger side I measured it and by golly it was about an inch closer on the right side than on the left… then I stood back and noticed that the whole bumper is sort of pushed down a little bit… damn… well, if that’s the only thing wrong I’ll be a happy camper… I will try to get it on the rack at T&J’s tomorrow morning. The school called and apparently Calie barfed in class again… Christy picked her up and also got Cindy and took them both to Kaiser to see the Kathleen the LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker).

Mike had soccer I took him, Calie, Monica and Autumn to Meadowlark, Monica felt bad so I took her and Autumn to the Acton Market and bought some groceries and took them home. I was going to do that after practice but this seemed expedient. I got back and watched practice till it ended at 1845… Mike was a mean jerk to Calie and even snapped at me… he was worse when we got home… I think that he is a very insecure young man… he lashes out at everything that threatens his ego. He was calling Calie names, putting her down, he laid into Cindy as soon as he walked through the door, knocked Monica down because she didn’t get out of his way… I haven’t seen him like this in a long time… I hope he snaps out of it before morning…

Autumn was even in a foul mood tonight… Christy and I were at a loss, nothing we did could snap her out of it. Christy finally got her to bed about 2130… Autumn can get cranky when she’s tired but tonight she was absolutely rabid…

 What a day……..

 Tuesday      October 3, 2000

…After I dropped off the kids I took the truck to T & J and put it on the rack… it seems to be fine. I went home and dropped the van off… the story isn’t quite so pretty… $645… new water-pump hoses and thermostat… Damn. We have to get it fixed, it’s the only vehicle we have that can carry us all.

I am listening to the “Debates”, poor GW seems to be stumbling… along ok… it’s easy to tell when he is sticking to the script and when he’s winging it. Gore seems never to be winging it… I think I like Bush’s candor but what I don’t like is what his conclusions are… it’s just the old PT Barnum philosophy of give the people what they think they want and then take the money to the bank. “Give seniors the ability to select their own HMO, guaranteed access to medicine, give vouchers to parents so they can educate their children, let workers invest part of their Social Security, test teachers, test children, reward schools that produce high test scores, build a strong Military, increase the morale of the military.” All real hot-buttons issues that people will fall for unless they actually stop and think. They all appear it have a higher opinion of the American publics ability to make sound financial decisions than I do. Some people will, most assuredly, make good decisions, but, using myself as an example, my view is that the majority of the people given a choice of how to spend their money will make the wrong choice. I worked for 30 years and managed to save $53.00… if it hadn’t been for Pacific Bell investing my money and other no-brainer decisions I made I would have had a hard time retiring. HMO’s are not philanthropic organizations. My sister and I had another… disagreement… about the merits of each of the candidates, since this is my diary I can safely say I was not persuaded by her rationalizations… she is a Republican… Bush is a Republican… the inevitable will happen in the voting booth. I am a Pragmacrat, I will vote for the guy that will let me sleep at night… Bush and Gore are both politicians and therefore neither of them have any credibility, they will both say what ever they think they have to say to get elected. I will probably vote for Gore because I am fearful of Bush policies. I am also afraid of his reported tendency to react to situations without thinking of the ramifications. Like rewarding schools that have the highest test scores… low test scores would seem to indicate schools that need more money not less. I think that high test scores indicate that the students were prepped better for the test and that it has nothing to do with what they are capable of….

…It was utter chaos getting the kids ready for school today. Nothing went smoothly, Christy was up off and on all night giving Monica breathing treatments. I finally took Mike to school, drove back up and loaded everyone else but Christian, I waited in the truck for him as long as I could and finally had to leave him behind, after I dropped the kids at their respective schools I went back up to get Autumn for PT/OT, Christy had her ready but Christian was still screwing around so I left him for Christy to deal with.

Autumn’s therapy went well, she got a little peevish toward the end according to Myra she was happy to see me and glad to leave… Christy called and informed me that she was on her way to Kaiser with Monica, Monica was having a bad Asthma attack and really struggling to breath… I stopped at Mikes school “High Desert” and tried for about five minutes to buy Mike a lunch they were not capable of accomplishing that apparently so I went to Acton Elementary and paid for his lunch there… I found out later that no one had bothered to tell Mike I had bought his lunch and he didn’t eat… a little irksome. I have not met his teacher or anyone else from that school… I am anxious to set up an IEP there… Mike seems to be having some behavior tribulations…

I got the mail, dropped off Autumn with Jan at school and went home. I got another call from Christy saying that she probably wouldn’t be back till late, they had Mokie on an IV and wore planning to give her another breathing treatment… poor baby… we have been this route with her twice before, so I am concerned but not apprehensive… Mokie is a tiger

I picked up the kids, took them home and gave them their medication then I took them down to Meadowlark to drop off Christian for Soccer. After soccer I dropped of Mike at Yasidro’s (sp) then I went up to pay for the van at T&J.’s then I moved it to the street. They lock up the place at 1700. I went back to Meadowlark with the girls and watched Christians practice. After practice I picked up Mike and drove over to drop off a skateboard deck at his “friend” Brian’s house. Brian is the guy that made harassing phone calls from our house 2 years ago, he also stole Mikes “Game-Boy”… He picks fights with him and calls him names… when I figured out which Brian we were going to I went a little ballistic…damn… I said, “Mike, if he’s your friend, your enemy’s must be truly frightening.” I am mystified by this relationship… the saying “With friends like him you don’t need any enemies.” Is truly apropos.

Christy got home with Mokie, Mokie was tired but in good spirits, I told her all her teammates were concerned about her…

Christy drove me down to Pick up van

 Thursday     October 5, 2000

… Monica gets a breathing treatment every three hours… Cindy woke up about 0200 complaining about her chest hurting… her pulse rate was about 130… We are concerned that her medication was causing her problems… this shaped up to be a busy day… We called off Christy’s Mom… Monica had an appointment to be re evaluated at Kaiser for 0930, Christy took Cindy to see a Doctor at about 1130, they said she was fine… all the tests came back “clear” they said it could have been heartburn… we will watch her. Christy had Autumn too, Autumn got to school at 1310…

I took Christian and Calie to school and drove to Golita to attend the IEP/ISP. I am trying to set up some parameters that we can all agree on that will allow "B" to come home… We want him to come home… we have a lot invested in him emotionally.

I went down to the soccer field to watch Calie and just as I made the turn onto the street by the field I saw a bunch of Sheriffs Deputies surrounding the house across from the soccer field. There were about twenty or thirty of them with rifles, pistols, a dog, and walkie-talkies very impressive show. Apparently the guy they were after left the day before, I ask what they wanted him for, they said “Parole violation” I thought to myself; “sure… he kidnapped the Easter Bunny”. The main cop came up to me to apologize, like I was in charge of all the kids playing soccer… he said “We called the school and they had a raid planned and they needed to know when all the kids would be off the premises… the school said “Any time after 1600 is fine, the school is completely vacated.” Except for 30 little girls at cheerleader school on the playground and 60 kids on the soccer field… pretty lame… I am disappointed in the cops for not doing some scouting before the raid and in the school for not knowing what happens on the premises after hours.

 Friday          October 6, 2000

… Christy took Autumn to Therapy to learn the mouth exercises we have to get her to limber up her lips… Autumn has very little control of her muscles.

I took Mokie to lunch at Don Cuco’s she ate French-fries and that’s about it… she ordered a burrito and took one bite and said eeeeewww… exasperating. Cindy had an appointment with Kathleen and I took the boys to soccer practice…

I am very tired today for some reason… I took a nap for about an hour at noon and I’m still wasted…

Richard Farnsworth killed himself today, he had bone cancer, his acting in The Straight Story was exemplary but the pain he showed us was not acting I guess he was as true to himself as he said he was. He could have held on a bit longer with pain medication… no… I don’t suppose he could. If you haven’t seen “The Straight Story” do your self a favor and rent it as soon as it comes out… I really enjoyed his acting… sad.

Saturday      October 7, 2000

…Soccer all day... we had some real good games… Christians had a double header, his team lost twice, the second game was 9 to 1, the winning team laid it on pretty good, I won’t pass judgment on the sportsmanship of the opposing coach, I don’t know what his priorities are, I just find it distasteful. Monica’s team won, so did Calie’s, … Calie’s team did the same thing to their opponent as the team that beat Christian I talked to the coach about it. He seemed a bit dismayed… I don’t understand the philosophy behind humiliation… Mikes team lost a hard fought game… I was not happy with the way Mikes game was coached either… but since I am not willing to step up to the plate and coach a team myself I will keep my mouth shut… Mikes coach has his own priorities… no one knows what they are but…that’s OK… it’s a “growth opportunity”.

Sunday        October 8, 2000

…Christy took the kids up to Tehachapi to pick apples, they apparently had a real good time… I watched some foot ball and played on the PC… I should have worked on the house but … I didn’t.

It will be a great day when our schools have all the money they need and the Air Force has to hold a bake sale to buy a new bomber.

Monday,      October 9 2000

… Gas prices are brutal… I pumped $50.00 into the truck and it stopped pumping…still 2 gallons short of a full tank… damn. I talked to a guy who just got back from Iowa… gas was $1.48 a gallon, we are paying $1.80 here in California… but we’re all a bunch of rich sum-bitches out here so we can afford it… I went to CostCo and spent another small fortune on food… I keep hearing on the news how prosperous we are and my Portfolio is going down about $1000.00 a day, gas prices are going up so is the price of food… don’t suppose those politicians are messing with our minds do ya…

Calie’s Dance started again, she really likes it… I’m not sure how good she is at it but she is certainly enthusiastic. Calie is Miss Personality, she is always looking to have a good time and to entertain her friends and us… she is so sweet most of the time…

It’s starting to cool off, a bit here, we had to turn on the heater…

… One of the most powerful images in history is that of Martin Luther nailing his criticisms of the medieval Church (his "95 Thesis") to a church door, thus beginning the Protestant Reformation.  But there is considerable doubt as to whether he actually published his critique so dramatically.  Many scholars believe now that he simply circulated it.

Today he would probably send it out simultaneously to millions via email.  AOL would ban it as Spam and bar him from its chat rooms, altering the course of history.

 Tuesday      October 10, 2000

…Christian had Soccer Practice today and Mike had to attend a meeting for Referees, He picked about 5 games… I don’t know what they are… I was listening to the Gush Bore debate… I actually broke out in laughter (startling the lady sitting next to me) when Bush said the wished we had gotten all those Iranians out of Iran (He meant Sadam Hussein) Gotta hand it to the guy… he keeps on punching…

The main dangers in this life are the people who want to change everything -or nothing.

Wednesday October 11, 2000

…Just another Wednesday, Autumn’s Therapy went well and we managed to get some protective inserts (called “cookies) for Autumns braces… we lost one somewhere last week, they are little rubberized pads that keep the brace from chafing the top of her foot…

 Thursday     October 12, 2000

… I took Cindy to dance, drove down to check on Calie at her Soccer Practice… he coach had left at 1600, Calie was there with the Team Mom and one of the other moms… this is the second time he has left early… I don’t mind but if he had called I would have just picked her up early… and Calie wouldn’t be so pissed.

 Friday          October 13, 2000

… I went out to see the movie “Meet the Parents” it was very funny in a anguishing sort of way… I liked it well enough but I wish I had been with someone. There was a sort of “Aw Lucy, don’t do that, it’s just going to make thing worse” inevitability about the whole movie… I was really empathizing with the Ben Stiller character; Gaylord Focker,   (they had a lot of fun with his name, got to be a little tiresome)

Christian’s friend is spending the night, he is Christian’s best pal… they are both very smart, and they are both Hyper and his buddy is… well… on a scale of one to 10, Christian is a 8 his pal is a 9+

Today is Friday the 13th… My friend John from somewhere in England sent me this:

In May 1312, the Order of the Knights Templar was forcibly dissolved by the king of France and their assets were seized for his own uses while they themselves were imprisoned, tortured and put to death in large numbers.  The king of England, Edward, followed suit in a desultory sort of way shortly afterwards but, with typical English reserve, kept it down to a dull roar and just quietly asset stripped them for his own pocket while allowing them to escape in large numbers and disappear into the woodwork.

The pope of the time was threatened with death or worse if he intervened so - having the usual courage of his convictions - he sat back and did nothing except supply names and addresses on the quiet.

The main excuse for this action was the claim, apparently unfounded and probably a set-up ("I was framed"!) was that the knights were undertaking un-natural practices and witchcraft!

So, unless you are a member of a very rich warrior monk sect, living in France and whose assets are being coveted by a French king who is virtually bankrupt then you probably have little to worry about today.

 Why?

The date on which the king of France acted was FRIDAY13TH MAY 1312.

This is truly the origin of triskaidekaphobia , seems pretty silly to worry about it now.

 Saturday      October 14, 2000

…Soccer today… so what’s new… Bunch of good games. Calie and Mike won, Mokie and Christian tied

 Sunday        October 15, 2000

… Christy took the girls to the Pumpkin patch to play and get pumpkins. I watched football and the boys played Mech-Warrior on the PC… laid back day.

Presque Isle, Maine…

I was born there,

Thanks for sending it Sally, very professional looking job Keith

Need one of Ashland now, from the rise south of town would be nice…

Thanks

… Today is minimum day at Meadowlark that means that Autumn goes to Morning Kindergarten and gets picked up at noon, I took Monica and Autumn to school but Christy came by at 0900 and took Monica to the Kaiser Pediatric Allergist. The Pediatrician Christy took Monica to for her Asthma attack set it up… the read out is not good, Mokie is allergic to her favorite thing in the whole wide world… dogs. ... Damn... not to mention Oak and Olive trees, grass, weeds, sage (We are surrounded by sage), ragweed… ad infinitum…

At 1400 we had Parent Teacher Conferences with Shirley Raineri (Autumn’s teacher) and Lori Hickman (Monica’s teacher) Mrs. Raineri has been around forever, she is very good with Autumn and is not the least bit challenged by her needs. I really get the feeling that she is in Autumns camp. On a personal level I am afraid I must strain a bit to get past her arbitrariness about some things. We do have a bit of a communication problem… I think that we are both very aware of it and we are trying to be tolerant of one another.

Lori Hickman seems to be the right teacher for Monica too, she is very strong and won’t tolerate any shenanigans from Monica but on another level she aware of Monica’s needs and makes allowances academically and is not as harsh as she could be when Monica gets rambunctious. Lori and Christy seem to get along fine, She is a bit more of a stickler for the rules than I am comfortable with, but with Monica… that is actually an attribute I can live with.

Tuesday      October 17, 2000

…I measured the window glass wrong, one pane fit and the other was an inch too short… I forgot to take into account the slider was shorter than the fixed piece… stupid. That’s why I don’t pack parachutes for a living.

Minimum Day for Mokie and Autumn again… tomorrow they get out at the regular time and the big kids have a Minimum Day… Oh Joy Unbounded……. Mike… I don’t know when His Minimum Days will be…

Mike had an appointment with my favorite psychiatrist Dr. Ivan Boroya.. He appears to be of Indian (India) descent, it’s hard to tell, he could be of any nationality with a name like that… he has no accent that I can detect. He is just not a very gregarious guy… very stoic… he treats us like we have come to him to apply for a Drivers License. It is really strange, I was expecting some sort of interaction… but he was very blasé about Mike’s “in your face” ‘tude. Mike has been very good and he has been a little foul-mouthed jerk too. Mike is about to be thirteen and has started the alienation process early… the next 5 years with him are going to be a struggle. When Mike is being good he can charm your socks off. When he is being rebellious I am tempted buy him a one-way ticket to anywhere in the world.

Monica had Soccer Practice at 1700, it was getting dark by 1755… we will go back to Standard time on the 29th at 0200… I can’t wait. I hate Daylight Savings Time… it is a bad joke… it’s supposed to save the country millions in energy savings alone… I don’t believe that a bit.

I have been sent four copies of a variation on the “You may be a Democrat” joke (A typically short-sighted, mean spirited, half truth, filled with cheap shots and libelous innuendo, a Right-wing Republican’s version of a joke) that I had tried to lampoon on my WebPage back on June 20th (Scroll down just about three quarters of the way at this address http://members.tripod.com/~pppumpkineater/ARJIO.html if you have not seen it). Sometimes I think I am the only one in the world who thinks that GWB is a scary guy… Gore is scary too… they all are… the only positive thing that Gush and Bore have done is select a couple of very smart running mates.  I don’t know which of these boobs is going to walk away with the presidency, and it really doesn’t matter I suppose, this government was designed to be pretty idiot proof (Though I suspect it will be sorely tested over the next four years) I expect a contentious term in office no matter who wins. I wish we had the ability to judge a man on his deeds and not on his appearance. It is getting to the point that I don’t want to have a man running this country who is stupid enough to want to be President… sort of a reverse Catch 22… If you are smart enough to run the country you are smart enough not to put yourself through all the bullshit it takes to get elected, so that leaves… what… Egomaniacs Sociopathic liars, talking heads… I am old enough to remember Truman’s Campaign for the Presidency but I don’t…not really. My dad said he was an honest man and a smart man, perhaps the last one we will ever have…

 Wednesday October 18, 2000

…I got Mike to school early, went home and picked up the rest and got them to school on time and drove Autumn to Therapy… she is doing very well there… they are very pleased with her earnestness and participation… I have an hour to kill between therapy and school starting so I went to Wal-Mart and picked up some more rat traps and some poison… looks like there is one under the house now… he/she’s a goner but I’m afraid that there is more than one. I also picked up a little outfit for Autumn because she had drooled the better part of a chocolate chip cookie all over the one she was wearing… I got home and picked up Christy for our 13:00 Parent Teacher meeting with Mrs. Conant for Cindy and our 13:20 meeting with Mrs. Hilham for Calie and our 1340 meeting with Mrs. Mileham for Christian. All the kids appear to be doing OK, Calie needs help with spelling and Christian needs some reinforcement getting his homework in on time. Cindy is just Cindy… she seems to be holding her own and is very happy in SDC… I am apprehensive about Junior High next year…

I picked up Mike at High Desert got the kids and Christy home and then turned around to get Autumn and Monica… when I got home I got Christian and took off for Soccer Practice… Calie, Monica and Mike tagged along… finally mad it home at about 1730… from 0730 till 1730 I have been shuffling people around… I am tired… I sent out a notice for my next ROF and searched the internet for some more Bushisms… pretty easy to find, one guy had about 150 of them in chronological order…impressive. The anti Gore e-mails I have been getting are pretty nasty so I thought, in the interest of equal time, I would rebut the innuendo and half truth’s and to be honest… truths with some actual quotes from the steel trap mind of the Great Geedubya himself… truth be told, I don’t like either of these guys Gore is a nerd and Bush is a shallow air-head… wish I could vote for Nader… but he’s an intellectual anarchist. Damn… I will post them on the RANT’s page…

Thursday     October 19, 2000

… Mokie and Autumn had a regular school day and the middle kids had a Minimum Day. Calie’s and Mokie had Soccer practice I know I was busy all day, but it’s Saturday as I write this I can’t for the life of me remember what I did… I am having  (as Carrie says) and “Elder Moment”…

 Friday          October 20, 2000

… No School today… Teachers Conferences… Christian and Mike had soccer practice… they both practice at the same time on the same field… they try to scrimmage for the last half hour… it’s usually an entertaining game… the little kids hold their own against the bigger kids…but the little guys usually have about two more players on the field so it’s a pretty fair game. Besides, the younger team learns a lot about technique and strategy and the big kids learn a little about fairness and sportsmanship letting the little guys think they are better than they are… Christian stole the ball from Mike and bragged about it in the truck… Mike just smiled and rolled his eyes… there is hope for him.

 Saturday      October 21, 2000

…Soccer all day… this is beginning to get real tiresome to write about… for those who are keeping score, Mokie’s team tied, Calie’s team won, Christian’s team tied, Mike had a double header and they won one and lost one… all were excellent games… Mokie’s game was the most interesting… these are one rank up from peewee’s under 8’s, we had parents on the opposing team yelling at the little guys like the fate of civilization was on their shoulders… we had one jerk on our side that wasn’t capable of shining it all on, he was itching to have a fight… when the pinhead  Referee (He had made bad calls that went in favor of both teams throughout the game)made a bad call that went in the other teams favor tying the game, their idiot parents (plural) started to gloat and rub it in, out idiot parent (singular) started to get indignant and yelled at the coach across the way, things escalated to cusswords… it was embarrassing to me as a grownup … yeah… that’s the word, grownup. Those poor little kids were just trying to have fun, and some of their parents were setting very bad examples… maybe I’m just not cut out to be a Soccer Dad, I get too upset with my peers.

It’s starting to get a little chilly in the evenings again… Fall is upon us…Winter is approaching…

 Sunday        October 22, 2000

…Got my annual check-up today… My Dr took a day off during the week so when I called in they got me scheduled for Sunday… I had the phlebotomist and X-Ray Tech and pharmacist all to myself… still spent almost 2 hours there but it was worth it… It’s comforting to know that I will probably make it through another year… Missed the end of the Ram Game though, saw Kurt get hid finger broken before I left but that’s about it… I heard the coach say the only indispensable man on the team is the running back (brain dead, can’t remember his name… damn) anyway…Marshal Falk!!! Well …  since this is the first game they have lost this year and the only missing component was Kurt Warner I think the coach might have to reevaluate his analysis of Kurt Warner.

A very interesting site… Michael Moore… the champion of the underdog…Interesting views on the Presidential Candidates… merciless actually.

Monday,      October 23 2000

… Calie had soccer practice today… Acton Soccer is a little strange… well… it’s strange to me, there are apparently two contingents (three counting mine) One believes that Soccer is some sort of New Age metaphysical motivational exercise set in place by a benevolent community for the sole purpose of providing their child with a high self esteem he hasn’t earned and doesn’t deserve. The next contingent is convinced that the sole purpose of the soccer league is to provide them (soccer dads and moms) with an arena to vent their frustrations with life in general and their child in particular in public with vulgar displays of derision and poor sportsmanship. The third contingent (Me) thinks this is just terrific, my kids are learning to deal with and make decisions that involve a slice of the bad and the worse of the human condition. I think it’s great, I am glad they are involved in all of this contention and lunacy… we talk about it on the way home… they are really incredulous at the level of apathy by one bunch and the intensity leveled by the other.  Today we had a Soccer Mom/Coach get in Mark’s (Calie’s Coach) face about a comment he made at a game between the two teams two weeks ago. Our team won 6 – 0, I was a little disappointed that he let the score run up without moving the weaker players to forwards but that aside he did a good job encouraging them… apparently at some point in his pep talk he said… “You guys are terrific, they have 12 players and we only have 8 and you are kicking their butts… good work.” Well, this lady interpreted that to be “You said my team is a bunch of losers and kicking butt is what Mark thinks soccer is all about”… Now… she has a right to her opinion, what I object to is her decision to carry on her strident confrontation in front of Marks team, a bunch of 8 and 9 year olds. She even tried to call her team over to have a real yelling finger pointing brouhaha.

I have a hard time relating to people who’s first impulse is to have a confrontation. I am always at a loss in situations that devolve into harsh words and recriminations before anyone knows the facts. People have forgotten how to be civilized with one another. In the old days people could agree to disagree, People could discuss a problem between them and clear up misunderstandings or at least understand each others position. I argue with my friends all the time, just had a lengthy one on the internet with my Nephew about politics… He is a Republican because… well I don’t know why… because he believes in some sort of ideal… because he’s always been one? Anyway… I used to be a Republican, then I was a Democrat, then I was an Independent… now I have relegated myself to being a GLP “Gut Level Pragmacrat”. I intend to vote for the person that I feel will do me and the country the least amount of damage… I don’t want to reform Social Security or anything else… I don’t want a Tax Cut (A president can’t give us a Tax Cut anyway, that’s the Appropriations Committee in Congress purview). I want humane Immigration Laws I want Religion the hell out of Politics. I want an intelligent, tough but compassionate man in the White House. I couldn’t care less about what he does behind his bedroom door, I don’t care what his religion is, I just want him to do the job.

My friend Jerri sent me this… my response is in Blue…

You've ever used a computer on Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the same weekend.

You use a computer at work only, and then only when instructed to by your boss...  and think "...what possible use would I have for a computer at home???"

You find yourself interrupting computer store salesman to correct something he said.

You point at the monitor and call it a computer

The first thing you notice when walking in a business is their computer system.  ...and offer advice on how you would change it.

You have no idea how the business can run so efficiently...  wonder where all the typewriters are?

You've ever mounted a magnetic tape reel.

You don't know what a Magnetic Tape Reel is...

You own any shareware.

You see no reason to "own" software.

You know more IP addresses than phone numbers.

You don't know the IP address of the company you work for, or even know what an IP address is.

You've ever accidentally dialed an IP address.

See above.

Your friends use you as tech support.

Your friends giggle and point at you behind your back.

You've ever named a computer.

(this is a little silly) ( I would deem this a character flaw...  they would probably name their car and have a pet name for their genitals too...has nothing to do with being a nerd)

…I couldn’t get on the Internet this morning… hell of a way to start the day…

Autumn didn’t go to school today, she’s feeling a little gunky… runny nose and seems to be a little lethargic; she has a low grade fever.

I took Mike to school, then came back and took everyone but Christian (who was being a pin head) to school then I went to the Arco Station to get gas, too many people so I went to the 76 station and bought a paper and a donut for Autumn, I went home and got Christian and took him to school… really frosts my buns. I am having a real hard time finding a way to communicate positively with him…

I went to Palmdale and got gas… 12 cents cheaper per gallon at the Arco in Palmdale than at the 76 in Acton. I saw Laslo Eislie’s truck at Denny’s (I am actually surprised when I don’t see his truck at Denny’s) so I drove over to sit and have a cup of coffee with him. Laslo is an old friend I met when I started riding dirt-bikes about 30 years ago. Laslo is from Hungary we have wonderful arguments about just about everything from the best motorcycle to who should be president… Laslo is very hard-nosed about everything, a tough minded Hyper Conservative Republican, his views on race and religion are about three furlongs to the Right of Attila the Hun… Well, Warner Z. was there too, another guy from my dirt-bike days and the two of them laid into me good, naturedly, before I even sat down… we reminisced about the old days about 2 minutes and then they started to jerk my chain about my being a “tree hugging Liberal Democrat” I called them “…a couple of Rush Limbaugh Ditto Brained Reactionary Nazi Republicans” and we proceeded to discuss the relative merits of the two front runners for the presidency in colorful words and phrases for about a half an hour, nobody was hurt, nobody’s mind was changed, it was fun… I had a “French Grand Slam Breakfast… we shook hands and I went out and ran some errands First I stopped by my ISP to find out what went wrong, they said that the “Authentification Server” went belly up… The owner had apparently rebooted it in the morning before he went to work (He’s a fireman in Glendale) the server came up and looked like it was working so he went to work. It apparently crashed at about 0500 Just before I tried to get online. The were not too concerned “Nobody gets up that early and gets on the internet… apparently their telephone voicemail system was blown out of the water within 15 minutes there were over 500 complaints by 0630… ISP’s are going to have to get used to the idea that the Internet is no longer Techie enclave, people are depending on it to do business and communicate. It is no different than the Phone Company, it is on it’s way toward replacing may aspects of the Phone Company and the Post Office already. They better wake up to the fact that dependability, reliability, and responsiveness is what’s going to keep them in business.

Another one from Jerri:

WHAT A LIFE - Can you relate??

Not really...

One evening a son was talking to his father about current events.

He asked what he thought about the shootings at schools, the computer age, and just things in general.

So what are they trying to say?  We should go back to the 40's?  (Since the guy/gal who wrote this claims he is 51 he/she was born in 1949 he is probably talking about the 50's.)

The dad replied, "Well, let me think a minute...I was born before:

 television,

Not if you were born in 1947...Video, as we now know it, first took root in the mind of Philo T. Farnsworth, and he was the first to successfully demonstrate the principal, in San Francisco on Sept 7, 1927

penicillin,

 Was discovered in 1928

 polio shots,

He got his polio shot when he was six

 frozen foods,

Baloney, He came home and ate a Swanson Frozen TV Dinner besides we had Swanson Frozen Dinners in 1948

Xerox,

Was patented when he was one year old on 1/1/1950 by the Haloid Company … come on… let’s hear it for unreadable carbon copies of documents and mimeograph machines

 contact lenses, frisbees

Yalies were flipping Frisbee pie plates around in the 40's and Whamo put them on the market in 1950..  He/she was one year old,...

 and the pill.

The pill was available for him/her to use when he/she was 11 years old... and the pill has saved the world millions of unwanted pregnancies

The good old days when William Randolph Hurst told you every thing you needed to know, people died of infections, Polio killed and crippled thousands, before that botulism killed thousands annually, ,

 There was no radar,

There was Radar in 1944

 credit cards,

carrying cash is a better option?

 laser beams

Yup... he was probably born before Laser Beams

ball-point pens.

ballpoint pen was patented in late October of 1888, leaky fountain Pens were a pain and besides ball point pens were commercially available in 1944.

Man had not invented pantyhose,

panty hose...1959

Nylon stockings

1940,

and garter-belts

(Huh, there were garter belts in the 1400’s)

dishwashers,

The first dishwasher was invented in 1850, the first automatic electric one wasn't until 1893 besides dropping soapy dishes & chapped hands were so much fun,

clothes dryers, (clothes were hung out to dry in the fresh air)

Sorry, Clothes Dryers were invented in the 1890's but most homes contended with crispy clothing till the late 40's,

 electric blankets,

he must have preferred 14 blankets on the bed and bed warmers setting the bedding on fire?

Air conditioners,

Carrier sold his first Air conditioner in 1902 Sweating all summer, freezing all winter...

we hadn't walked on the moon. Nope, Walking on the moon...?

Your Mom and I got married first-and then lived together.  Every family had a father and a mother, and every boy over 14 had a rifle that his dad taught him how to use and respect.  And they went hunting and fishing together.

Rotten marriages, wife beating, child abuse was rampant but unspoken.  Hundreds of men and boys were killed and wounded by drunken hunters each year...  they still are.

Until I was 25, I called every man older than I, "Sir" and after I turned 25, I still called policemen and every man with a title, "Sir".  In our time, closets were for clothes, not for "coming out of".  Sundays were set aside for going to church as a family, helping those in need, and visiting with family or neighbors.

Disrespecting a parent or policeman would get you the beating of your life, respecting authority for authority's sake brought us Adolph Hitler and Joseph McCarthy.  People who craved an alternative lifestyle lived lives of desperation and fear.  Religious persecution and intolerance was the way of the land. In some parts of the country it still is…

We were before gay-rights, computer-dating, dual careers, daycare centers, and group therapy.  Our lives were governed by the Ten Commandments, good judgment and common sense.

What is this about?  Gays shouldn't have rights?  Computer Dating is evil?  Wives should remain barefoot and pregnant?  Daycare is bad?

We were taught to know the difference between right and wrong and to stand up and take responsibility for our actions.  Serving your country was a privilege; living here was a bigger privilege.

Which aspect of our society is exercising bad judgment and lacks common sense...  and which aspect of our society has the right to decide who's judgment and commonsense is flawed?  Who feels differently about their country now?

We thought fast food was what people ate during Lent.  Having a meaningful relationship meant getting along with your cousins.  Draft dodgers were people who closed their front doors when the evening breeze started.  Time-sharing meant time the family spent together in the evenings and weekends, not purchasing condominiums.

Only the wealthy could afford to dine out. Meaningful relationships. what, pray-tell is wrong with a meaningful relationship?  There were no Draft Dodgers in the 40's? Bull, the rich bought their way out of the service the poor were hunted down.  Time share is bad too?  Who knew?

We never heard of FM radios, tape decks, CDs,

FM Radio is evil, an alternative to Rush Limbaugh and Howard Stern...  HERASY!!!

 electric typewriters,

Weren’t they awful, I hated them, about as dependable as a glass screwdriver… Imagine being nostalgic for an electric typewriter!!!

 yogurt,

When has there not been Yogurt?

 or guys wearing earrings.

Well you’re right there… earrings were de’rigueur  for guys off and on throughout history but not in the ‘50’s…

We listened to the Big Bands, Jack Benny, and the President's speeches on our radio.  And I don't ever remember any kid blowing his brains out listening to Tommy Dorsey.

And they loved it by God or they were ostracized   I wonder how many folks blew their brains out because Tommy Dorsey Big Bands, Jack Benny, and the President's speeches were the only thing to listen to... and besides, by the time this person was old enough to give a damn Bill Haley and The Comets came out with Rock Around the Clock, And Elvis followed on his heels. If he/She listened to Tommy Dorsey I'm

…Autumn went to the Doctors today… she is fine, he Phenobarbital level is “right on” she still has a goopy nose Dimetapp seems to be keeping it under control…

We got a call from Michael N., "B"’s psychiatrist at Devereux. Apparently "B" refused to attend the session, even after numerous attempts at bribery, coercion and ominous threats of privileges lost. "B" is showing his obstinate side, they haven’t seen that side of him up there yet… We aren’t sure what his problem is… Michael seems to think it’s that Rick, "B"’s councilor had promised to accompany "B" to the session and Rick was off today… I doubt it… "B" has a higher sense of self-preservation than that… it’s possible… but I think there is some other dynamic at play…

Christian had soccer practice… Christy was with Autumn so I had all the kids…

Christy went to her Bible Study Class, the kids were pretty good till just before Chris got home then Christian started to act up… Christian is my “Perfect Parent” nemesis, no matter what I do or don’t do, say or don’t say, him and I bang heads… I have never been at such a total loss as to how to deal with someone in my life. He is oppositional, confrontational, intractable, stubborn, defiant imp I have ever encountered… I am the only one that he lets see this side of him too, he saves it for me… Christy gets glimpses but never the full force… it’s me he is reacting to but I don’t know what it is about me that causes this attitude of his…

Thursday     October 26, 2000

… Autumn went to school today but I don’t think she feels real chipper… The Dimetapp seems to be keeping the symptoms at bay  and so she held up OK, Jan said she had a real good day…

Got a call from Myra at CCS today…she wanted to know what happened to Autumn yesterday, I asked Christy if she had called CCS yesterday, to tell the therapist that Autumn wouldn’t be in. She said “No” she thought I had called. I apologized and told her that Christy and I had gotten our signals crossed. She said “Well we won’t count it as a missed appointment then.” I said “fine”, and said good bye… took about three breaths and it dawned on me what she had just said… damn that pisses me off. I almost called her back but that would do no good, she is just a lemming following some sort of bureaucratic creed that says; “Our clients are all irresponsible deadbeats, they are just a bunch of air-heads that need to be threatened and cajoled into conforming to our internal edicts”

Kaiser is the same way… Doctors, and the people who work for and with Doctors are fundamentally responsible people with a higher moral and ethical code than the people they serve. Patients (clients, customers) are too wrapped up in the petty comings and goings of their insignificant little lives to meet their obligations and commitments to us professionals. Now, I agree that it is bad form not to call if you are going to miss or be late for a doctors appointment. I have been put in a position where I have been unable to make appointments and I try to call if I know ahead of time that I won’t be able top make it in… but there are times when that’s just impossible… and, on the other hand I have been kept cooling my heels in waiting rooms for hours with no explanation too, I have never had a Doctor apologize to me for being late… not once.

Friday          October 27, 2000

… Physical Therapy went poorly, Autumn just wasn’t into it… when I picked her up I could see she wasn’t feeling well, I called the school and told them she wouldn’t be in and asked them to tell Christy the situation, Christy was in an IEP for Autumn…

Christy got home all tweaked, when Leslie The Adorable Lawyer showed up, Mrs Gondar, the Principal of Meadowlark School went and got her a chair, then she left the room and apparently made a phone call, when she got back she said Leslie would have to leave because we hadn’t given her prior notice that a Lawyer would be coming so she was unable to contact the District’s Consul to be present… Leslie left and the meeting went on, Christy is kicking herself for not having Mrs. Gondar call Sacramento then and there. When she got home she did call and Sacramento cited her chapter Paragraph and line, we can call in the National Guard and we don’t have to notify anyone… boy is Christy pissed… and poor Leslie The Adorable Lawyer sat down at McDonalds for 3 hours waiting for Christy…I am surprised Leslie didn’t call someone… Oh well… next time we’ll show up with Gray Davis and Jesse Jackson ,

I have managed to keep this up fairly well but I can’t seem to find time to post the Journal, My e-mail is backing up, I have about 33 messages in my “Drafts” folder and 18 messages in my “Respond” (Abeyance) folder… chalk it up to chronic fatigue syndrome or something… I am up till after midnight practically every night and I still cand get everything done…

Example: Today:

bullet Up at 0530, perform my morning ablutions.
bullet 0600 Make coffee, pull e-mail
bullet 0630 Wake Monica and Mike for soccer
bullet 0715 Take off for Monica’s Soccer Game,
bullet 0800 Game is supposed to start, but there is no referee… a parent finally volunteered Mike was the line judge (He hasn’t enough training to be a referee, besides there was a bad call last week and parents nearly came to blows… I don’t want to subject him to that sort of bullshit)
bullet 0815 Game started (Monica’s team lost 3-2)
bullet 0915 arrived home with Monica, Mike had a game to officiate at 1000and assisted the other kids with their Halloween Costumes, Autumn is sick, Christian and Calie have games at 11:00
bullet 1020 took Cindy, Calie, Monica, and Christian… Dropped Calie off at her game at the Acton School, dropped Cindy there too in her costume so she could attend the Halloween Festival at the Acton School, Took Christian to Meadowlark School and dropped him off, went to the Acton Market to buy bread and Sugar for Christy and pick up money to buy tickets for the Halloween Festival… it is a “Fund Raiser” for the school Library.
bullet 1100 I went back to watch Christians game
bullet 1210 I went back to Acton school, Calie’s game was over, A kid on the opposing team was injured, totally dislocated knee pretty traumatic… glad I missed it…
bullet 1220 Went to the Festival… bought tickets…looked at the costumes… had some Nacho’s and a baked potato
bullet 1430 took the kids home, Mike was still officiating… he had four games to do.
bullet 1500 Picked up Mike… went to McDonalds to buy Autumn some chicken McNuggets… her favorite food, bought Mike a shake..
bullet 1600 took the kids trick-or-treating
bullet 1800 came home fixed the kids dinner
bullet 1913 got this far typing this inane crap…
bullet 2300  I have been trying to answer e-mails and update a genealogy file and wrangle kids… I snagged this section from an e-mail I sent out earlier tonight to save some time… Time change so it’s really only 2200… somehow that doesn’t make me feel any less tired…

Sunday        October 30, 2000

…Time change last night

 Monday,      October 30 2000

… Christy had to attend an IEP in Littlerock, about 20 miles from here. I tried to do some work with the tractor but it just won’t hardly move any more… I suspect the fact that it’s 53 years old has something to do with it but I will try to figure out it’s current malady tomorrow… the carburetor is really gunked up… I will take that apart and try to affix a new fuel filter… taking the old one off I discovered that the screen in the gas tank that is supposed to keep foreign particles out of the fuel system has rusted away… that is probably the least of it’s problems.

The third contingent (Me) thinks this is just terrific; my kids are learning to deal with and make decisions that involve a slice of the bad and the worse of the human condition.

I have a hard time relating to people whose first impulse is to have a confrontation. I am always at a loss in situations that devolve into harsh words and recriminations before anyone knows the facts. People have forgotten how to be civilized with one another. In the old days people could agree to disagree, People could discuss a problem between them and clear up misunderstandings or at least understand each other’s position. I intend to vote for the person that I feel will do the country and me the least amount of damage… I don’t want to reform Social Security or anything else… I don’t want a Tax Cut (A president can’t give us a Tax Cut anyway, that’s the Appropriations Committee in Congress purview). I want humane Immigration Laws I want Religion the hell out of Politics. I want an intelligent, tough but compassionate man in the White House. I couldn’t care less about what he does behind his bedroom door, I don’t care what his religion is, and I just want him to do the job.

…Time change last night… the extra hour of sleep was welcomed. I spent the day trying to watch football and cleaning the house… I actually got the house pretty clean… it has been cold and windy all day… we got our first real rain tonight… still haven’t shingled the shed yet… gotta do that this week…
