If a nation values anything more than freedom, it will lose its freedom, and the irony of it is that if it is comfort or money that it values more, it will lose that too.

William Somerset Maugham

I remarked in an E-mail that I buy the LA Times only to read the comics and do the crossword puzzle. John said:

"We can buy a book of crosswords over here - it's also a lot cheaper! If we want a comic, we just watch an opposition TV interview"

 J"

I got to thinking about his observation and it occurs to me that it there is an insignificant neurosis here that is worth analyzing…I have had crossword puzzle books before, as a matter of fact, I am looking at one in by bookcase now. The book contains the same type puzzles that I get in the daily paper... and I can’t do them, not because they are too hard, it’s because there are too damn many of them. After a few minutes of reflection on this phenomenon I have concluded that the reason I can’t do them is that I am uncomfortable thinking about there being page after page of them… so, what I really enjoy is not the challenge of the puzzle so much as knowing that when I open the paper there is only one puzzle to do and when I am done with it I can get on with the day, with the book… It’s just too boggling to think about…

The other aspect being I like ruts…for most of the thirty years I worked for the Fone Phactory my morning routine consisted, in part, of getting a smile from the comics and exercising my brain a little with the puzzle.

(digression)

Christy is home so I tuned in some Beethoven on the radio, put on my headphones to tune out the kids and started writing. While I was typing the drivel above I heard three advertisements, one for Mercedes Benz, one for JAG-you-are (Using a fake English accent to emphasize it’s elite superiority) and the other for Cadillac STS… I am sure that lots of money has been spent on research to determine exactly which demographic patronizes their station, boy do they have the wrong number where I am concerned. I wonder if their advertisers realize that a significant part of their audience not only can’t afford to drop $86k on a JAG-you-are or $119k on a Mercedes CL600, some of them are resentful when they ruminate (as I am) on the reality that unless they win the Lottery, they could never afford to buy one and some that there are people out there that not only can afford them, they can pick one up on a whim.

I took Autumn down to get her new brace fitted, she likes it, it gives her foot the support it needs so that it doesn't flop around... I am still a bit concerned about the atrophy of that calf muscle but the Prosthesis Dr/technician  says I needn't be concerned, I have an appointment with the Orthopedic Surgeon in February and the brace doesn't have to remain on all day....

Christy left her Nutrition Class early and took "B" to Dr. D. and they decided to up "B"'s dose of Zoloft (Anti depressant)

Sandy watched the kids at 1500 and I took Mike to Doane... D. is considering putting him on Wellbutrin, a medication that diminishes cravings. I am learning a lot about Mike, I am learning that he really is not a happy kid, he really is trying but his perception of who he is in this stupid world is skewed... he is genuinely depressed, the scary kind of depressed where you are between a rock and a hard place and the only way out is rage and rebellion or suicide. Damn this is scary... Mike has been very (for Mike) good the past week and a half. Very little anger and belligerence

Too often we... enjoy the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.

JOHN FITZGERALD KENNEDY, (1917-1963, United States President 1961-1963)

John Ashcroft, our Evangelical Attorney General, has decided to get some political mileage out of prosecuting “The Snipers”, for “Extortion” there is absolutely no reason to do this beyond Politics and Grandstanding. As a matter of fact, Washington, Louisiana, Virginia, Tennessee and Kentucky all want a piece of those two creeps.

The Media is hopping from foot to foot in anticipation of the trial, years of appeals and the final inevitable execution. The snipers have been doing their dirty work all over the country… the scary thing to think about is that they could have gone on indefinitely if they hadn’t gotten arrogant and over confident and stayed in Maryland too long.

Burrrr… gives me chills

I think I’ll go get a paper and take a shot at the Crossword and watch my kids play soccer.

Four Soccer games... four losses... bummer, they were pretty good games though... Mokie scored a goal... it was pretty, some kid passed her the ball and she pounded it into the net like she had done it a thousand times. Mikes team played lousy in the first half and held their own in the second... the team they played was much classier than the one they played last week. Christian played hard and Calie did too...

Christy had her Spaghetti Social at church, she took "B", he was a jerk.

"TO ANNOUNCE THAT THERE MUST BE NO CRITICISM OF THE PRESIDENT, OR THAT WE ARE TO STAND BY THE PRESIDENT, RIGHT OR WRONG, IS NOT ONLY UNPATRIOTIC AND SERVILE, BUT IS MORALLY TREASONABLE TO THE AMERICAN PUBLIC."

Theodore Roosevelt

Someone sent me this picture of Tom Daschle saluting the flag with his left hand... it was faked... they did a good job but if you look at a real picture of him you can see that the slight part in his hair is on the wrong side and he wears a conspicuous Wedding Ring on his left hand and men's suit coats button on the other side... I wish I knew who faked it and why... I also wish I could remember who sent it to me... not that I am especially fond of Mr Daschle, it's just that I want to be sure the person who sent it to me doesn't believe it to be real.

I tried to watch some football but things were too hectic, Christy went to her "Deaconess Meeting" and went shopping, she got home about 1500, When she got home I took the kids to the park, they had a pretty good time, we got donuts and came home.

Mike is spending the night at Mark's again... not pleased but he has been pretty good lately.

I took him his medicine, need to try to call off the buss tomorrow... probably won't be able to
