June, 2004 Week 5 |
|
Monday June 28 , 2004 If you want total security, go to prison. There you're fed, clothed, given medical care and so on. The only thing lacking... is freedom. Dwight D. Eisenhower, U.S. general and 34th president (1890-1969 I got a good night's sleep and some breakfast and went down to the Motorcycle Accessory Store outside of town. He opened up about 10 minutes early for me, I was concerned about being hassled about an out of town check but it was mo problem... he was a very nice fella. I got underway immediately, I decided to pass on Harrisburg because Pat and Mike were both working, it would be better to see them on Sunday when they were home for the long weekend. I made it to Granby, Connecticut and after a few false starts made it to my Cousin Richard 'Dick' Daggett's house... The last time I saw him was about 1950 so I had no idea what to expect... He and his wife Jeannie were very nice, I had planned to get a room in town but they offered to put me up... even shared their evening meal with me... We talked about family for a while... I should have taken notes. Tuesday June 29 , 2004 I said my goodbye's and left pretty early and headed up to New Hampshire and Maine. I stopped and spent about a half an hour with my Uncle Bob... he is still sharp at 80 and it was fun talking to him, even if it was just a short visit. I need to get my cousin Tim in to take a picture of the photo of his father hanging on the wall. I headed up to Gorham, Maine to see Carolyn... no answer on the phone and my MapQuest map let me down again. I finally gave up after about an hour of hunting around and asking questions. I found out the day I got back home that she and her sister Barbara were out on the coast somewhere attending the wedding of one of Carolyn's daughter Elizabeth. I went to a KOA, they wanted $35 to put up a tent in a mosquito infested swamp... I got my money back and I went back down to Saco (Pronounced Socco by the locals) an spent too much for a room, The guy wanted $60, I talked him down to $40. (7/10/2004: I just called Carolyn, she was at work when I went by, and the address is correct but the entrance to her place is camouflaged...) Wednesday June 30 , 2004 I rode down to Boston, I stopped in Wakefield to see my cousin Martha V. and had a short but pleasant visit... I left the key in the bike with the ignition on... killed the battery... I felt like an idiot... two guys a few houses down gave me a push and I managed to bump start it in 2nd gear... whew... I got to Leigh's house and surprised her... I had planned to arrive late on the 1st... The house was unexpectedly scantily populated... I found out after getting a hug that Leigh's sister in law, Sue had just passed away on Monday... everyone had flown back to Ojai California for the Wake and Funeral... Leigh hadn't slept in quite a while and was a little punchy... by days end, I had met the kids... 8 of them... Leigh said she had 'room at the inn' and could put me up for two days till the rest of the family came back from California.... Leigh has 9 children, one is Bill, grown and gone with three kids of his own... Michael teaches Autistic kids in Oregon, Tisha I am not sure what she does, Meg meg is an IT pro, Betsy is a teacher, John 'JJ' is living here in LA and working for the Daily News as a reporter., are all out in the world, Bobby is in college I think, Chris not sure what he is doing & Peter is in High School. |
